A short guide to what counts

Zakat is 2.5% of the wealth you have held above the nisab for one full lunar year (the hawl). These notes cover the common cases — for anything unusual in your own situation, please ask a scholar you trust.

Counts toward Zakat

  • Cash in hand and money in bank or wallet accounts
  • Gold and silver in any form — coins, bars and jewellery
  • Goods bought to resell, valued at their current selling price
  • Money lent to others that you expect to be repaid
  • Shares or funds held for investment or trading

Does not count

  • The home you live in and your household furniture
  • Your personal car and everyday belongings
  • Land, shops or machinery you use but did not buy to resell
  • Money already set aside and paid out as Zakat
  • Wealth that has not yet reached the nisab

The nisab, in plain words

Silver nisab — 612.36 grams (52.5 tola). If your net wealth is worth at least this much silver, Zakat is due. This calculator uses the silver nisab, the lower threshold, so more of the poor benefit.
Gold nisab — 87.48 grams (7.5 tola). Shown for reference; it applies to wealth held only in gold by some scholarly views.
Rate — 2.5%, one-fortieth of your net zakatable wealth, once the nisab is reached.

Good to know

Debts due now and immediate essential expenses are deducted first — Zakat is charged only on what remains.

Use today's market rates for gold and silver, and value trading goods at what they would sell for today, not what you paid for them.

Many people in Pakistan pay their Zakat in Ramadan, but it is due whenever your lunar year completes.
